Bad 3D Platformer with horrible camera

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 12:23 (A review of Woodle Tree Adventures)

Woodle Tree Adventures gives me the feeling of being a developer’s firstborn child, and while that does not necessarily come off as bad, there are noticeable improvements to be had. The checkpoints are wonky, but the worst offender of all is easily the non-controllable camera. And even then, there is so little diversity to be had in this game with only half an hour of actual gameplay which only consists of platforming and sometimes attacking. The game is short and easily completable for the completionists out there, but otherwise there is little reason to play this game. It works and Woodle controls alright, but there are too many negatives for me to recommend this game.

Fun dungeon crawler held back by terrible UI

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 12:02 (A review of Dungeons & Darkness)

Dungeons & Darkness is probably hurt by its title being too similar to the big guns; there’s almost nothing to find on this game and only the people actively searching for a game like this will find it. Which is a shame because overall, it is a fun game to play. The UI is hard to work with and definitely the game’s weakest point, but dungeons are fun to explore and combat works. Melee does take some getting used to however, with attacks being locked into animations and becoming unmovable while its happening. The furniture and crystallize mechanic however, that is something I will definitely applaud the game for. The difficulty is fair but despite being able to choose a class, you’re pretty much forced to use all of them; just having one isn’t going to work out, and that might put off some people. There is a demo on the Steam store as well which I do recommend checking out, because my recommendation is dependent on whether you like the points mentioned in my review or not.

Nostalgia overload! Going through the VG history

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:53 (A review of Super Life of Pixel)

Super Life of Pixel is a pleasant return to the history of video games, and probably one of the best to do so for consoles and home computers before Nintendo started their domination. Every console is represented well with both graphics and music, and the stages are nicely designed with a ton of secrets to find. That said however, this game has an unhealthy addiction to hidden spikes. Couple that with Pixel himself not changing throughout the entire game and only getting more agile due to lesser console limitations, which makes the gameplay overall working well, but simple. The nostalgic references to old games more than make up for it, but what I’m trying to say is: the game could potentially be even better. And I see the potential in this project, so I’d definitely like to see this expanded upon!

Great parody on MMORPGs in the Neptunia world

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:47 (A review of Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online)

Easily the most 'high-budget' Neptunia game so far, Cyberdimension Neptunia is a wonderful parody on the MMO genre. Dungeons are no longer recycled, there are a lot of new monster models and customisation is superb. The plot and newly introduced characters are slightly weaker than former games, but the humour is still there. Gameplay is based on offline MMOs, or rather hack 'n slash. It's not very in-depth (there are no skill trees, combat mostly comes down to repetitive combo's with sometimes taking elemental advantages into account), and bosses are absolute damage sponges. Overall, it does the job it's set out to do well, and that's to make a fun parody of the genre while still being an entertaining game in the process.

Fun twin-stick shooter with tons of weapons/perks

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:43 (A review of Crimsonland )

This game is super fun. A twin-stick top-down shooter with a crazy amount of weapons, perks and modes to play. By doing the campaign I kept unlocking more and more and that felt really good, and due to the variety in weapons and perks I occasionally experimented with them to check which combinations I like the most. While some would argue that some weapons are downright useless, I have used at least all of them once and combined them with perks to at least get some use out of them. There are some slight and weird difficulty spikes throughout the game however. Gamers who have played this game are probably familiar with the first stage on the hardest difficulty, or the almost endlessly reproducing spider boss stage. And after that, it just becomes really easy again. The same goes for the extra modes, but this only applies to achievements as they are endless modes.

Fun skill-based dungeon crawler with bad post-game

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:38 (A review of Deep Dungeons of Doom)

A simplistic but overall fun dungeon crawler. Learn the attack pattern of the enemies and fight with three different heroes to get as far as possible. The multiple amount of weapons, perks and stats makes the gameplay interesting for the short amount of time it takes to beat. All my compliments I have go towards the main game however. The postgame is tedious and unbalanced. There is an endless dungeon which on paper sounds fun, but your stats are unable to be increased after 20 while the enemies their HP does increase, making battles long and tiresome. Getting gold is also an absolute chore, and since you need more than 30k for every perk.. I won't blame you for cheating. Beat this game, but try to avoid completing it unless you are a true diehard.

Enjoyable platformer held back by story mode

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:30 (A review of Angel Express [Tokkyu Tenshi])

While Angel Express has a very cutesy artstyle, story and a surprisingly good OST, there is nothing else that makes it a must play. The gameplay overall functions and is fun, but it's very easy to lose momentum, which is not helped by multiple unpredictable dead-ends. Of course you can get past them if you have a boost, keyword being if. And to beat the story you have to go through it at least 7 times, starting from the same stage every single time. A single playthrough till one ending doesn't take very long, and when revisiting a stage you are able to play only one of two to continue, but it does get tiresome to go through the same stages over and over. The stage builder is a fun diversion, but online capabilities are limited so don't expect to get too much use out if. Not to mention how buggy the game is when it comes to completion/achievements. I won't deny that I had my fun with this game, but I doubt I'll revisit it any time soon.

Troll platformer designed for psychopaths

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:27 (A review of Eryi's Action)

I honestly did not enjoy this game too much, but I will add that it might just be not to my preference. Given that many people did enjoy this game, you can take mine with a grain of salt. Regardless, I do want to go into detail why I don't like Eryi's Action. The game is a troll platformer where every move is uncertain because you might just die. A lot. Admittedly, seeing Eryi abused in so many ways is oddly satisfying and sparks curiosity.. that probably sounded psychopathic. But the entire game is like this, and the controls during flight or underwater sections don't exactly help with making the game fun. Dying in a single hit makes you see the game-over screen more of than not, but at least there's no life counter. The presentation is not bad. If all of what I've said don't sound as something you'll dislike then by all means, go ahead and play it. It's not very long so probably you'll find more enjoyment out of it than I did.

Short, bland but functional puzzle game

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:21 (A review of Neon Prism)

A fun but very short maze-like puzzle game, you control a ship with the ability to slow down time or blink ahead to make it to the end of the maze while avoiding multiple obstacles. It is advertised as simple which is probably the best way to describe this game. There is nothing it does wrong, but also definitely not something to set itself apart from other puzzle games in the same genre. It takes a bit over an hour to complete 100% and after that you'll probably forget all about the game. If you're an achievement hunter or looking for a short game, wait for a price drop and try it out. It is very short, but at the very least the time spent was worthwhile.

Geometry Dash but easier

Posted : 5 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2019 11:17 (A review of Mr. Dubstep)

You wouldn't be wrong by saying this game is a Geometry Dash rip-off because there's basically no denying it. Regardless, it does have its own appeal for people who like Dubstep. I don't belong to that group so I can't really say if the music is any good; to my ears it all sounds horrible. It would probably have been even better if the music was in some way incorperated into the stages themselves however, as right now it's just background music and nothing else. It is also much easier than Geometry Dash so if you liked the appeal of that game but the difficulty was too high, this is a good alternative. It plays pretty well overall and like most Just1337 games, it's very short so you can't go wrong with this game at a good price.
